NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES OF ALLAHOne of the most important pillars of Tawheed (knowledge and belief of Allah) is the knowledge of the 99 beautiful names of Allah, and also the attributes of Allah. This is because The Legislation of Islam directs every Muslim to know these, as they are part of the AQEEDAH and part of everyday IBADAH.
Allah orders us in His saying : “ And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.” Qur’an.surah Aaraaf 7:180 Thus the ayath clearly displays : 1. The obligation of worship through the Most Beautiful Names of Allah 2. The obligation of abandoning those who believe and indulge in : - tahreef ( to change or distort the wording of Allah’s name or attribute) - tamtheel / tashbeeh (to claim Allah’s Attributes resemble the attributes of the creation), - ta’teel (denying any of Allah’s attributes) - ta’weel (to give a figurative explanation of any of Allah’s Attributes). And this is the backbone of the aqeedah (creed) of the Prophet (sallahAllahu alayhi wasallam) and his companions (radhiyaAllahu anhum ajma’in) and the pious predecessors. The importance of these Beautiful Names of Allah and their numbers ; is specified in the authentic ahadiths narrated that The Prophet (sallahAllahu alayhi wasallam) said : “ Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise..” Sahih Al Bukhari 6410 (Vol 8:419) and another narration "Allah has ninety-nine names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise." Sahih Al Bukhari 7392 (Vol 9:489) الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ الرَّحِيمُ تَنْزِيلٌ مِنَ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيم “ [This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful” [Fussilat : 2] َ هُوَ اللهُ الذِي لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَالمَلِكُ القُدُّوسُ السَّلامُ المُؤْمِنُ المُهَيْمِنُ العَزِيزُ الجَبَّارُ المُتَكَبِّرُ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُون “ He is Allâh than Whom there is Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He) The King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. The name has been mentioned in the sunnah together with the preceeding name (Al-Hayiyyu) . And most people have confused/mixed the name as-sattar instead of As-Sitteer . And this is wrong as the name as-sattar is not established in the Qur’an nor in the sunnah. رواه أبو داود وصححه الألباني من حديث يَعْلَى بن أمية رضي الله عنه: ( أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَأَى رَجُلاً يَغْتَسِلُ بِالْبَرَازِ بِلاَ إِزَارٍ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ صلى الله عليه وسلم : إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ حَيِىٌّسِتِّيرٌ يُحِبُّ الْحَيَاءَ وَالسَّتْرَ فَإِذَا اغْتَسَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ ) compiled by Abu Dawuud and declared saheeh by al-Albanee . from the hadeeth of Ya'la (radhiyaAllahu anhu) that: The Apostle of Allah (sallahAllahu alayhi wasallam) saw a man washing in a public place without a lower garment. " [Swad: 66] وَلَوْلا فَضْلُ اللهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ وَأَنَّ اللهَ رءُوفٌ رَحِيم “ And had it not been for the Grace of Allâh and His Mercy on you, And that Allâh is full of kindness, Most Merciful.” [An-Nur : 20] رَبَّنَا لا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّاب " Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You.Truly, You are The Bestower." [Al-An’am : 8] ثبت من حديث ابن عباس رضي الله عنه ، وكذلك من حديث سعد بن أبي وقاص رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ( إن الله جواد يحب الجود ويحب معالي الأخلاق ويبغض سفسافها ) It is established from the hadeeth of Ibn Abbass (radhiyaAllahu anhum), and also from the hadeeth of S’ad ibn Abee Waqqas (radhiyaAllahu anhum) that the prophet (sallahAllahu alayhi wasallam) said : “Verily Allah is The Bestower of Good ( The Most Generous ), and He Loves generosity and He loves noble manners, and He hates lowly manners.” [Silsilah as-saheeha : 1378] في صحيح مسلم من حديث عَائِشَة رضي الله عنها أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يَقُولُ في رُكُوعِهِ وَسُجُودِهِ: ( سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلاَئِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ ) In saheeh Muslim , from the hadeeth of ‘Aishah (radhiyaAllahu anha) that the prophet of Allah (sallahAllahu alayhi wasallam) used to say in his rukuu and sujud : “ Perfect , Blessed, Lord of the Angels and the Spirit ” [ Saheeh Muslim : book of prayers (chapter of what to say in rukuu and sujud: 1/353 : 487 ] وَإِنَّا لنَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوَارِثُون “ And verily, it is We Who give life , and Who give death : and it is We Who remain Inheritors (after all else passes away).” [Al –Hijr : 23] سَلامٌ قَوْلاً مِنْ رَبٍّ رَحِيمٍ “ (It will be said to them): Salamun (peace be on you), a Word from The Lord (Allah) , Most Merciful.” [Ya-Sin : 58] سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الأَعْلَى “ Glorify the Name of your Lord, The Most High” [Al –‘Aala : 1] وَإِلهُكُمْ إِلهٌوَاحِدٌ لا إِلهَ إِلا هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ “ And your Ilaah (God) is One Ilaah (Allah), La ilaaha illa Huwa (there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He), The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.” [Al–Baqarah: 163] This is a summarized translation of the compilation by the noble Shaykh Dr. Mahmud Abdur-Razzaq Ridhwanee of Egypt. |
