GOG AND MAGOG

Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are two huge nations of the sons of Adam. They are known as Gog and Magog in English. The emergence of the mighty Gog and Magog is also a major sign of Qiyamah (Day of Resurrection).  [1]

Among the ten major signs

We were sitting in the shade of the chamber of the Messenger of Allah () discussing (something) and when we mentioned the last hour, our voices rose high. The Messenger of Allah () said: The last hour will not come or happen until there appear ten signs before it: the rising of the sun in its place of setting, the coming forth of the beast, the coming forth of Gog and Magog, the Dajjal (Antichrist), (the descent of) Jesus son of Mary, the smoke, and three collapses of the earth: one in the west, one in the east, and one in the Arabian Peninsula. The last of that will be the emergence of a fire from Yemen, from the lowest part of Aden, and drive mankind to their place of assembly. Sunan Abi Dawud 4311 [2]

Quran

  1. "When Gog and Magog are let loose (from their Barrier) and they swiftly swarm from every mound..."  Surah Al-Anbiya  21: 96

  2. Until, when he reached between two mountains, he found, before (near) them, a people who scarcely understood a word.

They said, ‘O Dhu’l-Qarnayn! Verily! Gog and Magog are doing great mischief in the land. Shall we then pay you a tribute in order that you might erect a barrier between us and them?’

He said: ‘That (wealth, authority and power) in which my Lord has established me is better (than your tribute). So help me with strength (of men), I will erect between you and them a barrier.

Give me pieces (blocks) of iron,’ then, when he had filled up the gap between the two mountain-cliffs, he said, ‘Blow,’ till when he had made it (red as) fire, he said, ‘Bring me molten copper to pour over it.’

So they [Gog and Magog] were made powerless to scale it or dig through it.

(Dhu’l-Qarnayn) said: ‘This is a mercy from my Lord, but when the Promise of my Lord comes, He shall level it down to the ground. And the Promise of my Lord is ever true.’” al-Kahf 18:93-98

Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir, in his book Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah - The Beginning and the End, provides this general summary - part of which has already been quoted - of the history and future of Gog and Magog (who are usually referred to as 'the Huns' by modern historians), and of the building of the wall by Dhu'l-Qarnayn:

Gog and Magog are two groups of Turks, descended from Yafis (Japheth), the father of the Turks, one of the sons of Noah. At the time of Abraham, peace be on him, there was a king called Dhu'l-Qarnayn. He performed Tawaf around the Ka'bah with Ibraheem, peace be on him, when he first built it; he believed and followed him. Dhu'l-Qarnayn was a good man and a great king; Allah gave him great power and he ruled the east and west. He held sway over all kings and countries, and travelled far and wide in both east and west. He travelled eastwards until he reached a pass between two mountains, through which people were coming out. They did not understand anything, because they were so isolated; they were Gog and Magog. They were spreading corruption through the earth, and harming the people, so the people sought help from Dhu'l Qarnayn. They asked him to build a barrier between them and Gog and Magog. He asked them to help him to build it, so together they built a barrier by mixing iron, copper and tar.

Thus Dhu'l-Qarnayn restrained Gog and Magog behind the barrier. They tried to penetrate the barrier, or to climb over it, but to no avail. They could not succeed because the barrier is so huge and smooth. They began to dig and they have been digging for centuries; they will continue to do so until the time when Allah decrees that they come out. At that time the barrier will collapse, and Gog and Magog will rush out in all directions, spreading corruption, uprooting plants, killing people. When Jesus, peace be on him, prays against them, Allah will send a kind of worm in the napes of their necks, and they will be killed by it

History

Gog and Magog were at the time of Dhul-Qarnayn. Dhul-Qarnayn was a good man and a great king. Allah gave him great power, and he ruled the East and West. He held sway over all kings and countries, and traveled far and wide in both East and West.

He traveled eastwards until he reached a passage between two hills, through which people were coming out. Those people did not understand anything, because they were so isolated; they were Gog and Magog. They were spreading corruption through the earth, and harming the people, so the people sought help from Dhul-Qarnayn. They asked him to build a barrier between them and Gog and Magog. He sought their help in building it, so together they built a barrier by mixing iron and copper.

Thus Dhul-Qarnayn restrained Gog and Magog behind the barrier. They tried to penetrate the barrier, or to climb over it, but to no avail. They could not succeed because the barrier was so huge and smooth. So they began to dig, and they have been digging for centuries; they will continue to do so until such a time when Allah decrees that they come out. At that time a hole will be made in the barrier, and Gog and Magog will rush out in all directions, spreading corruption, uprooting plants, and killing people. When Jesus (peace be upon him) invoke Allah against them, Allah will send a kind of worm in the napes of their necks, and in the morning they would perish like one single person. [3]

Their Existence today

What indicates that these tribes exist at present, and indeed are attempting on a daily basis to get out and attack people, and that is showed by the hadeeth reported by Ibn Maajah with a saheeh isnad from Abu Hurayrah(R), who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that Gog and Magog are digging every day until they can almost see sunlight, then the one who is in charge of them says, “Go back, we will dig again tomorrow.” Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 3298

Umm Habeebah bint Abi Sufyaan(R) reported from Zaynab bint Jahsh (R) that the Prophet entered upon her in an agitated state and said, “Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, woe to the Arabs from an evil that has approached! Today a hole like this has been opened in the barrier of Gog and Magog,” and he made a circle with his thumb and forefinger. Zaynab bint Jahsh(R) said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah , will we be destroyed even though there are righteous people among us?’ He said, ‘Yes, if evil becomes overwhelming.’” Sahih al-Bukhaari, 3598 [4]

Their barrier

Anyone who reads the story of Dhu’l-Qarnayn and how he dealt with this nation in Soorat al-Kahf will know for sure that they exist and that the barrier which was built is not metaphorical or imaginary, but is a physical barrier built of iron and melted copper. The basic principle is that we should take this Qur’anic text as it is, without resorting to any kind of misinterpretation or trying to twist the intended meaning. The Qur’aan has told us how the barrier was built and what materials were used, so it is not right to say that it is a metaphorical or imaginary barrier. In Soorat al-Kahf, Allaah has told us the story of the Muslim king and the great leader Dhu’l-Qarnayn (may Allaah have mercy on him): “Until, when he reached between two mountains, he found, before (near) them, a people who scarcely understood a word.

They said, ‘O Dhu’l-Qarnayn! Verily! Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj are doing great mischief in the land.

So they [Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj] were made powerless to scale it or dig through it. (Dhu’l-Qarnayn) said: ‘This is a mercy from my Lord, but when the Promise of my Lord comes, He shall level it down to the ground. And the Promise of my Lord is ever true.’”  Quran Suarh al-Kahf 18:93-98 [5]

In Hell

Abu Sa'id(R) reported: The Messenger of Allah () said: Allah, the High and Glorious, would say: O Adam I and he would say: At Thy service, at thy beck and call, O Lord, and the good is in Thy Han1d. Allah would say: Bring forth the group of (the denizens of) Fire. He (Adam) would say: Who are the denizens of Hell? It would be said: They are out of every thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine. He (the Holy Prophet) said: It is at this juncture that every child would become white-haired and every pregnant woman would abort and you would see people in a state of intoxication, and they would not be in fact intoxicated but grievous will be the torment of Allah.

He (the narrator) said: This had a very depressing effect upon them (upon the companions of the Holy Prophet) and they said: Messenger of Allah , who amongst us would be (that unfortunate) person (who would be doomed to Hell)? He said: Good tidings for you, Yajuj Majuj would be those thousands (who would be the denizens of Hell) and a person (selected for Paradise) would be amongst you. Sahih Muslim 222 a. [6]

Story

An-Nawwas b. Sam`an(R) reported that Allah's Messenger () made a mention of the Dajjal one day in the morning. He () sometimes described him to be insignificant and sometimes described (his turmoil) as very significant (and we felt) as if he were in the cluster of the date-palm trees. When we went to him (to the Holy Prophet) in the evening and he read (the signs of fear) in our faces, he () said:

What is the matter with you? We said: Allah's Messenger, you made a mention of the Dajjal in the morning (sometimes describing him) to be insignificant and sometimes very important, until we began to think as if he were present in some (near) part of the cluster of the date-palm trees.

Thereupon he () said: I harbor fear in regard to you in so many other things besides the Dajjal. If he comes forth while I am among you, I shall contend with him on your behalf, but if he comes forth while I am not amongst you, a man must contend on his own behalf and Allah would take care of every Muslim on my behalf (and safeguard him against his evil). He (Dajjal) would be a young man with twisted, contracted hair, and a blind eye. I compare him to `Abd-ul-`Uzza b. Qatan. He who amongst you would survive to see him should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf (xviii). He would appear on the way between Syria and Iraq and would spread mischief right and left. O servant of Allah! adhere (to the path of Truth).

We said: Allah's Messenger, how long would he stay on the earth? He () said: For forty days, one day like a year and one day like a month and one day like a week and the rest of the days would be like your days. We said: Allah's Messenger, would one day's prayer suffice for the prayers of day equal to one year? Thereupon he () said: No, but you must make an estimate of time (and then observe prayer). We said: Allah's Messenger, how quickly would he walk upon the earth? Thereupon he () said: Like cloud driven by the wind. He would come to the people and invite them (to a wrong religion) and they would affirm their faith in him and respond to him.

He would then give command to the sky and there would be rainfall upon the earth and it would grow crops. Then in the evening, their pasturing animals would come to them with their humps very high and their udders full of milk and their flanks stretched. He would then come to another people and invite them. But they would reject him and he would go away from them and there would be drought for them and nothing would be left with them in the form of wealth.

He would then walk through the waste land and say to it: Bring forth your treasures, and the treasures would come out and collect (themselves) before him like the swarm of bees. He would then call a person brimming with youth and strike him with the sword and cut him into two pieces and (make these pieces lie at a distance which is generally) between the archer and his target.

He would then call (that young man) and he will come forward laughing with his face gleaming (with happiness) and it would be at this very time that Allah would send Christ, son of Mary, and he will descend at the white minaret in the eastern side of Damascus wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two Angels. When he would lower his head, there would fall beads of perspiration from his head, and when he would raise it up, beads like pearls would scatter from it. Every non-believer who would smell the odor of his self would die and his breath would reach as far as he would be able to see. He would then search for him (Dajjal) until he would catch hold of him at the gate of Ludd and would kill him.

Then a people whom Allah had protected would come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he would wipe their faces and would inform them of their ranks in Paradise and it would be under such conditions that Allah would reveal to Jesus these words: I have brought forth from amongst My servants such people against whom none would be able to fight; you take these people safely to Tur.

And then Allah would send Gog and Magog and they would swarm down from every slope. The first of them would pass the lake of Tiberias and drink out of it. And when the last of them would pass, he would say: There was once water there. Jesus and his companions would then be besieged here (at Tur, and they would be so much hard pressed) that the head of the ox would be dearer to them than one hundred dinars and Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would supplicate Allah, Who would send to them insects (which would attack their necks) and in the morning they would perish like one single person.

Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would then come down to the earth and they would not find in the earth as much space as a single span which is not filled with their putrefaction and stench. Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would then again beseech Allah, Who would send birds whose necks would be like those of Bactrian camels and they would carry them and throw them where God would will.

Then Allah would send rain which no house of clay or (the tent of) camels' hairs would keep out and it would wash away the earth until it could appear to be a mirror. Then the earth would be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing and, as a result thereof, there would grow (such a big) pomegranate that a group of persons would be able to eat that, and seek shelter under its skin and milch cow would give so much milk that a whole party would be able to drink it. And the milch camel would give such (a large quantity of) milk that the whole tribe would be able to drink out of that and the milch sheep would give so much milk that the whole family would be able to drink out of that and at that time Allah would send a pleasant wind which would soothe (people) even under their armpits, and would take the life of every Muslim and only the wicked would survive who would commit adultery like asses and the Last Hour would come to them.Sahih Muslim 2937 a [7]

Hajj will continue even after Gog and Magog

Narrated by Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri(R): The Prophet said "The people will continue performing the Hajj and `Umra to the Ka`ba even after the appearance of Gog and Magog." Narrated Shu`ba extra: The Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till the Hajj (to the Ka`ba) is abandoned. Sahih al-Bukhari 1593 [8]

Myths

Many myths surround Gog and Magog. One being that the common people believe that Ya'juj and Ma'juj are not human beings but some kind of third being.

Hadrat Abu Saeed Khudri narrates that the Messenger of Allah said, "On the Day of Judgement, Allah will tell Adam (Peace be upon him) to pick out the people of Hell from his progeny. Adam Peace be upon him will ask, "O Allah, who are they?" Allah will say,"999 out of 1000 are people of Hell while the one is a a person of Heaven ." On hearing this the Sahaba over taken by fear asked, "Who will the ONE Person of Heaven be?" The Prophet Peace and blessings be upon him replied, "Do not grieve the 999 will be Yajuj Ma'juj while you will be the one Jannati."   Sahih Muslim 222 a

A second myth is that people believe that Ya'juj and Ma'juj were created from Adam Peace be upon him without Eve (Hawa) Peace upon her on the basis of Ka'ab's narration, "They are from the children of Adam. That is AdamPeace be upon him had a wet dream, the semen intermingled with the earth and they were created from that Earth."   Fathul-Bari

It should be noted that this narration is very weak and objectionable as it is proven from many Ahadith that the Prophets of Allah do not have wet dreams because the wet dream is from the devil and the Prophets of Allah are protected from the devil.

Secondly there is a hadith which can be found in Fathul-Bari that clearly states that they are from the progeny of Prophet Nuh Peace be upon him. The Prophet Nuh Peace be upon him was definitely from the children of Adam Peace be upon him and Eve Peace upon her. [9]
